![]() ![]() Daryl (Norman Reedus) doesn’t even exist in the comics, and by all accounts, Abe (Michael Cudlitz) should have been on the receiving end of that deadly eye piercing. Denise was a character who had compelling comic story to spare. It’s too unfortunate that the single Molly on the show was used as a stepping stone for not one but two other alpha white men. It takes finesse, training, and know-how to be a doctor, and Denise had all of those things. Just scavenge a copy of Bullets For Dummies, scrounge up a few materials, and voila! Bullets. She was a doctor in a world where people are frequently maimed, shot, and bitten. Yes, Eugene (Josh McDermitt) is important to the community, but so was Denise. TV is full of male characters like Eugene who bumble through life on their intelligence, but nerdy, socially awkward women aren’t really anywhere to be found on the small screen and they definitely don’t exist in the world of the Dead. Molly girls are expendable simply by the virtue of the fact that they don’t exist on TV. ![]() That’s been my life over the past three days.Ī large part of the reason I’m so sad is that I can’t believe I didn’t see that Denise would be doomed from the start. If you don’t believe me, watch the tragic scene one more time, and pretend that Denise is your stand in. I can now fully empathize with the tiny blonde Beths, the wise old Hershels, and the hulking but sensitive Tyreeses of the world. There’s so many feels when your counterpart dies in the Dead world. When she died, my representative as a bookish and sweet but willful individual died too, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried. If I met another Molly girl, well, I knew I had found a kindred spirit.ĭenise was most certainly a Molly girl, and I loved that she was allowed to exist in this brutal, uncompromising world of The Walking Dead.
